Goodness And Mercy Shall Follow Me

David said, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life” (Psalm 23:6, NKJV). He was a man who committed adultery and murder, but he believed goodness and mercy would still follow him, even though there were certain consequences he could not escape as a result of his sin. David’s sin found him out, but the mercy of God found him also. Read more

Song Lyrics

Sin has been removed. Failure has been taken away
All your shortcomings were made mine
Nothing but mercy for me (x3)
Surely goodness and mercy will follow me
Surely goodness and mercy will surely follow me all my life

Redeemed (x3) am I
Redeemed (x3) and clean am I
You purchased my life again Saviour
My Saviour

Hope in my heart (x2)
You’ve restored the dream
You’ve restored my dream
All the things that I can be
You’ve restored to me

Song Notes

This spontaneous song originated in the context of one of our worship services at Pursuit, during which time Ray exhorted the congregation along the lines of David believing in the goodness and mercy of God, even though he had failed. After a time of teaching about God’s goodness being greater than our failures, Ray begins a prophetic song, “There is mercy new every morning, grace abundant, as far as the east is from the west... sin has been removed, failure’s been taken away, all your shortcomings were made mine, nothing but mercy for me..."

There follows another section of exhortation flowing into a second passage of prophetic song around the subject of thanksgiving for our redemption, being cleansed from sin, and worshiping the Saviour.

The prophetic session finishes with Ray exhorting believers to meditate on their destinies in God, thus encouraging a consciousness of righteousness and hope, rather than a contemplation of past failure and despair.

The extended version of the song goes for 11 minutes and 11 seconds. This is maybe too much exhortation for a musical podcast, so it was decided to create a reduced “song only” version (lasting approximately 4 ½ minutes) for those who preferred to listen to the song multiple times without having to listen to the teaching every time. But I believe the message is one that needs to be heard, so we have two options of the song for people to choose from – the extended and reduced version.

"There is no place God's mercy does not go. No place His grace cannot cover."

Here is the transcription of the full extended version, including the lyrics of the sung portions:

David said "Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life". Here’s a man who committed adultery, here’s a man who murdered another man so he could cover his sin but it found him out. But I’ll tell you something else that found him. Grace and mercy. That’s why David could say, surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life. Can we say that this morning? Or are we too conscious of our adultery with the world. Are we too conscious of the fact that we’ve murdered something or somebody, somebody’s dream. Are we conscious of our adultery and murder or are we conscious of grace and mercy. Because one is bigger than the other. One should not outshine the other. When grace and mercy swallows up all our shortcomings, mercy new every morning. Grace abundant as far as the east is from the west.

Sin has been removed. Failure has been taken away
All your shortcomings were made mine
Nothing but mercy for me (x3)
Surely goodness and mercy will follow me
Surely goodness and mercy will surely follow me all my life

You know the world makes a big deal out of sin. The church especially so. Everybody is finding fault with somebody for something. Everybody’s blaming somebody for something. But God put it away. God put sin away. As far as He is concerned, He dealt with it. But the church makes such a big deal of it. I’m not saying that we sin that grace may abound. Of course not. But why make such a deal of it when God put it away.

Redeemed (x3) am I
Redeemed (x3) and clean am I
You purchased my love again Saviour
My Saviour

Hope in my heart (x2)
You’ve restored the dream
You’ve restored my dream
All the things that I can be
You’ve restored to me

There’s nothing keeping you from being anything your heart desires. God has removed every obstacle, every failure, every impediment. He’s brought us out in to a wide place of grace. There is no place His mercy does not go. There’s no place His grace cannot cover. To suggest otherwise is to say redemption was not complete. Your case is covered. It’s been taken to court and the judgement executed against you, nailed to the cross, punishment made in full and you are free. Every accusation is a lie and a judgement in disguise. It’s groundless. In your mind and in your conscience, when a memory or a thought is played out on the stage of your mind, that case, God has thrown out of court and you should refuse to give it place. Throw it out of the judgement court of your own mind. Paul said “I do not dare even judge myself.” There is only one judge. And when we judge ourselves we take the place reserved for only one person. He has already passed judgement. We presume upon His role if we even condemn ourselves. We have no right to make a judgement where God has already ruled. So Father, we renew our minds this morning and we do not judge ourselves, we just worship.

Lift your hands this morning, to the ruler of all, to the judge of all, to the ruler of the spirits of men made perfect in His sight. God we worship you this morning and we thank you for your mercy and your love, and the promise of a dream fulfilled. I want you to see your destiny. If you had all the money in the world, if you had your youth again, if you had all the help you needed, what would you do? God renews your youth like the eagle. Mount up on wings of prayer. Cast your vision beyond today into the future and see the endless possibilities His blood has purchased for you. There is nothing. There is nothing that stands between you and the love of God.
