Embark on a Journey...

Hope Deferred Makes the Heart Sick

Hope for the Future

Do you have hope for the future? Is your hope deferred year after year, dream after dream? When our hope is deferred it makes the heart sick. As the old year rolls over and we enter the new, we try to aspire to a fresh sense of hope for our future, and the awakening of possibilities our faith has laid claim to. But what happens if year after year, we drag into our present, memories of what DIDN’T happen in previous years?

Hope Deferred

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick...” (Bible Scripture from Proverbs 13:12 NKJV)

What do we do as Christians, when our hope is deferred?
This is a very real problem (if we invest in a little honesty!) that everyone must deal with at some stage in their life. But when we do, we ought not to focus on our unfulfilled dreams, but instead focus on the dream-giver. Our hope is not meant to be in a situation, but in a person – God. My heart becomes sick not because an expectation goes unfulfilled, but because believing that my situation is hopeless takes me away from God. When I fail to remember God’s faithfulness, I partner with fear and depression, and that’s when my heart becomes sick.

The Bible says to fear not, but “only believe.” Fear is believing a negative outcome that does not presently exist – it’s supposed reality rests only in some possibility for the future. The role play of the mind is not yet a tangible outcome, and in that sense fear is unreal, as it is not yet present reality. And most things people worry about never actually happen.

In the movie After Earth, the character Kitai faces off a monster that is attracted by fear. The monster only “sees” people who emit fear. Kitai is able to overcome his enemy by refusing to give in to thoughts that project to him what is not yet for him a present reality.

Our hope is not meant to be in a situation, but in a person – God.

God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind. What does that mean? A sound mind is a disciplined mind. You don’t let your mind think just whatever it wants – you choose what to think. Filter out memories that talk of past failures. Filter out fears of a future unfolding negatively. You do not live in the past or the future, you live only in the present, so get to work on making TODAY the best day you can. He promised that He would be with you, one day at a time.

If you choose to make every TODAY a faith filled day, you will come to the end of another year full of such days, and your future will take care of itself.
