“My flesh and my heart fail; but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever”. Psalm 73:26 NKJV
David is an example of one who prayed prayers for strength and courage. Strength does not come by trying to put on a brave face. Strength from God comes when we pray and lean on Him rather than our own knowledge and understanding. Throughout his life, David experienced betrayal, guilt, loneliness, grief, loss and pain. The book of Psalms chronicles some of his prayers for strength. He was completely real with God and did not sugar coat his situation or what he was feeling.
David was completely honest with God and with himself regarding his situation and his total dependence and need for God. However, he does not end his psalms in a place of despair or hopelessness. There is always a “but God”, or a “yet” – some clarifying point or acknowledgment that lifts our eyes and puts everything else in perspective. This acknowledgment that God is above all and is the Name above every other name gives strength to our spirit. When we are honest with ourselves and with God, our prayer for strength comes from a place of reality and assurance that God Almighty is on our side and that His strength is ours. |

"There is a strength we have access to at all times. It is the Strength of God."

If you are in a place of needing strength and courage, begin by being real with yourself and with God. David said “my flesh and my heart fail” (Psalm 73:26 NKJV). He acknowledged he was feeling weak and needed the strength of God. However, he didn’t stay in that place of weakness. He had a “but God” turning point. Begin to acknowledge the greatness of God. When you do, this becomes your “but God” turning point. He is God Almighty, the Creator of the Universe. Begin to worship, to give thanks and declare the greatness of His Name. As you do, you begin to put on strength and God’s strength becomes yours.
“He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.” Psalm 1:3 NKJV
Our leaves do not have to wither when we encounter life’s circumstances. We can be like the tree in this verse that is planted by the River. Begin to tap into the river of God’s strength. Trees that are planted by the River develop roots that go down deep. When circumstances are not favorable, when there is drought or wind, these circumstances do not make them wither because they are anchored in something other than their own strength. They know Who their Source is.
What is your source? Is your trust placed in yourself, your ability to figure things out, your experience, your bank account, your doctor or your connections? When our own strength begins to shake and crumble, our prayers for strength begin to be placed in Someone other than ourselves and in the One true Source of strength.
“Awake, awake! Put on your strength, O Zion… Shake yourself from the dust, arise” Isaiah 52:1-2 NKJV.
This bible verse outlines some important keys on how to come into a place of strength. If your environment seems to be filled with despair, despondency and hopelessness, begin to shake off the thoughts and limitations that are extinguishing your strength. We have the privilege of walking in God’s strength and not our own. Begin to put on strength! When the greatness of God becomes the lens we view every situation from, the dust of despondency that has settled on our hearts and minds gets shaken off. There is renewed hope for your situation and increasing strength you can walk in every day!
